The Friends of Bar Park volunteers have done some work in the park with the co-operation of Sheffield Council. The building has been painted inside, some work has been done on the windows and it has been treated with an anti graphiti solution. We have tidied up the entrance area, planted 60 shrubs and 200 daffodil bulbs. We were instrumental in getting the area outside the gate newly surfaced, and we are negotiating to get a new wrought iron gate. The Friends have also done some painting in the park e.g. the notice boards and the frames of the swings. We have repaired and replaced the wooden fence down the west side of the park. The old water fountain pedestal, which is really a memorial, has been tidied up. There is a possibility we could get something done about the old toilet block which is an eyesore.
The park is owned by Sheffield Council but is within the boundaries of Rotherham. After some lobbying by us Sheffield is willing now to let Rotherham take it over but says it will cost over £10,000 in legal fees to transfer it to Rotherham's ownership which Rotherham will have to pay. The money is not available at the moment. There is lots more to tell, but if anyone is interested then come on board (the active members of the Friends number six at the moment). Our next meeting is at the Ball Inn, Hesley Bar on Tuesday 9th March 2010 at 6.30pm.
