Bar Park

Postby K.Rodgers on Tue Aug 11, 2009 10:32 am

Just heard on Rother FM that discussions are taking place to transfer ownership of Bar Park from the Sheffield council to Rotherham and some progress may then be made to bring it back to its former glory of which lots of people I am sure have fond memories of.

Keith,

Thanks for the update on this, I've just done a google search and got the following:

http://www.gettingthereuk.co.uk/causes.cfm?causeID=38
http://www.rotherham.gov.uk/nr/moderngov/Published/C00000790/M00007375/AI00043012/$BarParkThorpeHesley.docA.ps.pdf

Looks like some excellent work has been done by the Friends of Bar Park and Thorpe Hesley Forum (Not this online forum which is due to be renamed!).

The Friends of Bar Park volunteers have done some work in the park with the co-operation of Sheffield Council. The building has been painted inside, some work has been done on the windows and it has been treated with an anti graphiti solution. We have tidied up the entrance area, planted 60 shrubs and 200 daffodil bulbs. We were instrumental in getting the area outside the gate newly surfaced, and we are negotiating to get a new wrought iron gate. The Friends have also done some painting in the park e.g. the notice boards and the frames of the swings. We have repaired and replaced the wooden fence down the west side of the park. The old water fountain pedestal, which is really a memorial, has been tidied up. There is a possibility we could get something done about the old toilet block which is an eyesore.

The park is owned by Sheffield Council but is within the boundaries of Rotherham. After some lobbying by us Sheffield is willing now to let Rotherham take it over but says it will cost over £10,000 in legal fees to transfer it to Rotherham's ownership which Rotherham will have to pay. The money is not available at the moment. There is lots more to tell, but if anyone is interested then come on board (the active members of the Friends number six at the moment). Our next meeting is at the Ball Inn, Hesley Bar on Tuesday 9th March 2010 at 6.30pm.

More news on Bar Park - we are in the process of ordering new gates for the entrance. We are having a litter pick in the park and a general tidy up. If you want to do your bit for the community and help this will take place on Saturday 20th March 2010 at 10am. Just turn up - we'll see you there!

Hi im new to the web site, but would like to say that the work that has been done by the friends of bar park is fantastic, we have seen them litter picking and having a general tidy up of the Park and i have mentioned this to the sheffield council parks and country side team.
I help run a local football team in the rotherham and district sunday league and we train at the park every week and think the work that has been put in to the park has given it a new lease of life. I have applied for my football team to play there home game there (from sheffield council) and if sucsessfull would like to offer the services of my team in any futre events in fund raising (be it to gain money to help have the park transfered to rotherham council, if that is an option) or basic cleaning up of the park.
