I attended Hope Methodist Chapel during the early 1960's our "teachers" were Mr. Brook , Mr. Doughty,Miss Law and Mr.Colin Wood who I believe was Superintendent. We learnt our scriptures but also how to socialise and had many lovely parties , especially Christmas and Whitsuntide. Our Chapel always had aWhitsun Anniversary when we would sing hymns . For this the girls had to wear white and I think boys wore white shirts. Before the Anniversary sing we had our Whit Walk around the village. It was a very happy and colourful event with many banners carried by the adults. I have no photos of this part of my life and was hoping someone would have some I could borrow for a short while so I can get copies . Many Thanks . Like this website and love this village .

I lived at 31 Thorpe Street from being 3 years old until I was twenty.  Prior to that I lived at 12-14 Thorpe Street, the farm/cottage across the road which belongs to my grandparents Jean and Jack Sylvester.  I have great memories of Thorpe Hesley as a child and growing up there was fabulous, everyone knew each other in the village and you couldn't get away with anything because your parents knew about it before you got home.  Thorpe Hesley will always be a place that is very close to my heart!!!

My grandfather was Tom Steer of Thorpe Street (opposite the Masons Arms).  I well remember the village in the early 1950's;  Stentons farm where I fetched fresh milk and orange juice;  Peats where I bought smarties.  My Aunt,Mary Griffiths. small cottage (now demolished) who lived further down the street where my cousin, who still resides in Thorpe Hesley, kept pigs, geese and turkeys and the pit of Thorpe Hesley where my father was lamproom attendant.  I remember fetching butter from the farm on Barnsley road and the fair which took place in the field at the bottom of my grandfather's back garden.   Thorpe Hesley was a beautiful, social, peaceful village and I spent a very happy childhood there. I have a photo of the lamproom and will gladly send to anyone who is collecting old photos of the area.

Richard Globe: Copenhagen, Denmark

Hello, I've been doing research into my family name and have found that my 6x great grandfather Thomas Globe (born 1759) was apprenticed to Richard Norborn a blacksmith from Thorpe Hesley in 1769. Thomas Globe was a foundling probably born near or in London. He was sent to the Ackworth Foundling Hospital in 1768. Thomas married Sarah Sylvester in 1782 in Rotherham since Thorpe Helsey had no parish church until much later. Thomas and Sarah had 10 or 11 children - nine surviving into adulthood. It is from here the Globe name in the UK and North America descends. If there are any descendents from the Sylvester or Norborn family still residing in Thorpe Hesley, and interested in family history, please feel free to contact me.

Dave Edwards: Thorpe

I lived in Thorpe until 1989. We lived on Hesley Bar. I remember all the neighbours and at one time would have known 90% of everyone in the village of a certain age. Still have fond memories of playing in the park which is now a ruin of its former self. I remember them doing it up the last time and taking out all the fantastic rides that were there. My mum and dad Jean & Reg Edwards are still on the go over in Bramley. I still have great memories from knocking my teeth out falling off a Chopper on Hesley lane to nearly killing myself on my motorbike in a crash at the crossroads, also of great mates that Ive sadly lost touch with....good days, good people.

Kathleen Shaw

Hello Karen, ask your Aunty Eileen About the black mohair sweater, she'll know what you mean I'm sure especially if you mention Castleton!! I was Kathleen Harrison in those days, about 45 years ago, she'll also remember Maureen Duffy & Marylin Hodkin!! I knew all Eileen's brothers & sisters. Lorraine was my sister Jean's friend and neighbour on Thorntree Rd, sadly they both died at a young age. I hope you & your family are all ok, best regards, Kath
